Inside sales

Research the account before the call, not during it

Sellers spend about a quarter of their time selling. The rest is research and admin — and that is the part to hand over first.

The situation

Reps arrived at calls having read a website for four minutes. Meanwhile the CRM was three weeks stale, because nobody updates a CRM at six in the evening.

What we did

The agent builds a one-page account brief before every booked call — structure, recent public filings, likely stakeholders, prior conversations — and keeps the CRM current from call recordings. It drafts first-touch outreach; a person sends it.

Do-not-contact enforcement lives inside the tool, not in a shared spreadsheet. Unsolicited outreach is regulated differently in every market you sell into, and the rules do not care that an agent sent it.

What changed

Meetings held rose; meetings booked rose faster, which is the trap. We tracked held, not booked, from the second week onward.

What to watch for

  • If a lead score cannot be explained for a single record, it is an unexplainable allocation of your team's attention.
  • Contact enrichment often relies on sources with unclear provenance. Establish where the data came from.
  • More meetings is not more pipeline if the no-show rate moves with it.
